Master Gardener Meeting Minutes
April
27, 2005 4:30 p.m.
Meeting held at 4:30 in Room 145 at the County Services Building
Meeting called to order: Marilyn Gress, Facilitator
Roll call: 17 of 24 active members present.
Approval of the minutes: Minutes for March 2005 meeting approved.
Motion approved by Jennie and seconded by Dorothy.
Treasurer's Report:
$1,185.95- Balance as of April 20
Balance includes $550 made from Spring Symposium. Twenty-five people
paid to attend. Food and speakers were great. Both newspaper
coverage and location were good. It was agreed to donate $50.00 to
Grace United Methodist Church with $25.00 going to the custodian for her
excellent assistance. Tammi will put it on the agenda for consideration
next year. Also includes $20.00 from Janice speaking at Janusian Club
and $100 donated by an anonymous person.
Committee Report:
- Lake Park
– Barb reported there were fewer people this year for clean up. Mulch
was put on some beds and left by others. If you have a bed there, check
it regularly. She will advise everyone when slates are located so they
can be redone.
- Clary Gardens
– Barb reported volunteer sessions will be on Thursday and Saturday.
Those interested were asked to stay after the meeting for orientation.
- Eliza’s Garden
- Judy stated the garden was cleaned up last weekend and looks good.
Connie will till the vegetable garden and plans to put a walkway through
it. Rose bushes will be planted as soon as beds are ready. Tammi
has tomato plants growing for the garden. Herb bed was also cleaned
out.
- Weaver’s Garden
– Janice reported that weeds had been pulled and leaves picked up.
Routine maintenance will be done every Thursday morning, weather permitting.
- Parking Lot –
Marilyn reported it was cleaned up last week and looks good. Barb has
Lamb’s Ear that can be planted there. Anyone having excess plants for
hot, dry site please contact Marilyn.
- Phenology Garden -
Tammi confirmed the garden is doing well and the natural science of it is
very interesting.
- Plant Sale
- Tracey discussed plant sale to be held at the Fairgrounds on May 7 from
9:00 a.m. until 12 noon and the various committee members. Plants need
to be there by 8:00 a.m. No seedlings. Betty volunteered to help.
Donna Johnson will arrange for the $50 in cash, the cash box, and colored
labels which will be distributed to each organization on May 7. Gourds
will also be sold. Tammi will provide Fact Sheets to pass out.
Janice will check with Donna Johnson to confirm checks are to be made payable
to Green Valley Garden Club.
- Photography Art Show
at Pomerene Center – Margaret, Tracey and Betty are on the committee.
Margaret reported it is still in progress. She discussed her meeting
with Ed and his suggestions for taking superior photographs. Show is
scheduled for June 17 – July 31.
- Ohio Flag Garden – Reta plans
to purchase plants from Ralph Emerson of Trinway for $8.25 per flat; Wells
quoted her $10.95 per flat. She is in the process of contacting Friends
of the Park and Girls Scout for their help at the garden. Flag Garden
planting date is May 28.
Unfinished Business:
- Gardening Symposium
Wrap-Up – Thought needs to be given on what to cover next year.
It was agreed to give Helen McClain a $25.00 gift certificate for all her
work.
- Pomerene Center Tree
Planting – Susan, Margaret, Reta and Teresa will help the students
of Lincoln Elementary plant two trees at the Center on April 28 from 1:00
– 3:00 p.m. Discussion was held on what needs to be done.
- Buehler’s Garden Day
– Date changed to May 7 at 10:00 a.m. Teresa, Marilyn and Jennie volunteered
to be there. Tammi will provide Fact Sheets.
- Day-Trip Update
– Discussion was held on bus trip. Tracey reported contacting Wade
& Gatton (only date available in June is 25th at 9:30 a.m.) and Possum
Run on available dates in June. She will check with them on July dates.
The Malabar Inn Restaurant Inn was mentioned as lunch site. Marilyn
contacted Muskingum Coach: 30-passenger bus $550 plus $8.50 tax=$588.50
or $20.00 per person; 55-passenger bus is $700 plus $74 taxes=$774 or $14
per person. Marilyn will ask if there is any difference in price since
location is in Richland County.
New Business:
- Rainbow Day Care/Susanne
Bowen Memorial Garden – Susan, Margaret and Tammi taught children
how to plant seedlings in egg cartons. Rainbow would like mulched memorial
garden there to honor former teacher Susanne Bowen. Contact Susan,
Margaret or Tammi with ideas. Maintenance might be taken over by Riverview.
- Hypertufa Program
– Another program was discussed. Emphasis was put on having a follow-up
program after the hypertufa have a chance to dry and people measuring and
mixing their own ingredients instead of MG’s doing it. Barb has some
supplies and there are gloves available. Supplies and forms will be
provided. Date is June 16 at 6:00 p.m. at Lake Park at Picnic Shelter
across from restrooms. Barb will reserve shelter; Tammi will get flyers.
- Newsletter Articles
– Tammi thanked everyone who contributed to the last newsletter. The
next newsletter articles are due June 20.
- Clover Bud Camp
– Sarah Jane Lindsey needs volunteers to help show 5 to 7-year-old boys and
girls how to plant flowers on June 18 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.

Educational Presentation:
Betty spoke on “Gardening in Containers” and demonstrated how to arrange
plants in a container. Nivarde discussed seeds and passed out seeds to take
home.
